Desalination project scoping report available today

Santa Cruz Sentinel, 2/4/11

The scoping report for the environmental study to be conducted on the Regional Seawater Desalination Project is expected to be published online today. The report will be available on the project's website,

The two-month period for the Santa Cruz Water Department and Soquel Creek Water District, partners in the desal project, to take public comments on the scope of the environmental impact report ended Jan. 10. The report will summarize those comments, and the environmental study is expected to be completed this fall.

The two water agencies have proposed building a plant that would transform up to 250 million gallons of seawater to freshwater every day. Supporters say the drought-prone region needs the facility to boost water supplies, but critics say it would require too much energy to operate and take other tolls on the environment.
