Water awareness week slated

The Soquel Creek Water District is celebrating National Groundwater Awareness Week and Fix a Leak Week Saturday to March 16 by educating ratepayers about their water source and ways to protect the community's groundwater supply.

The district relies solely on over-drafted groundwater aquifers to provide water to 15,000 residences and businesses in mid-Santa Cruz County, and local sources are at risk. During the last several decades, more water has been drawn from the aquifers than is naturally replenished, putting the water supply at risk for seawater intrusion.

The district is working to increase water conservation and evaluating sources of supplemental water, including possibly partnering with the Santa Cruz Water Department on a desalination program. For information, go to
