Group hosts desal plant debate

The League of Women Voters of Santa Cruz County will host a debate on building a desalination plant 7-8:30 p.m. April 14.

Officials with the Soquel Creek Water District and members of the Santa Cruz Desal Alternatives group will attempt to inform the public on the issues surrounding the proposal. The Soquel Creek Water District and City of Santa Cruz, the agencies collaborating on the project, say the plant is needed to offset future water shortages, while critics say it's too expensive and that a drop in demand shows the plant is unnecessary.

The debate will be held at First Congregational Church Sanctuary, 900 High St., Santa Cruz. Doors open at 6:15 p.m., and parking is available in the church parking lots.
